I suggested to my son in law that we build a rally car with his 240Z, but he didn't want to. If I was younger I might build one!

I've been dreaming of making a rally Z. It'd be so freaking sweet.

But I'd kinda feel guilty gutting mine, since its pretty original. I'd like to find one that got ruined by some idiot putting on a terrible body kit and ruining the interior, and then just start a project from there. But that'll be something for some day when I'm wealthier. haha

Its a rally, London to Cape Town. Also see Peking to Paris rally. They have web sites and all information. I know the Peking is about $30k and you get fuel and mechanics etc..

I really want to do the Mongol rally next summer. London to Ulaanbaatar, in a car with an engine smaller than 1L. No backup, no planned route.

I actually have a good friend that has lived in Ulaanbataar since the 60's and I have been there a couple times. We drove a land crusier across China and Tibet and up to there. We were on our own and a guide in Tibet. I've done overland trips like that in Australia, Africa and Asia but never an actual rally. If I was younger I would! I'd use a small diesel Subaru or something tough for that. Roads are brutal there!

Wow, that's genuinely incredible — I'm sure you've got some great stories!

The Mongol "Rally" is definitely interesting. It's not a race, per-se. You don't really get anything for getting there first. It's more of an accomplishment just to get there. The idea is to take a car your grandmother would use to pick up groceries, and drive it across some of the roughest roads in the world. Apparently the Nissan Micra is a pretty popular car to use — dead reliable, and can ford water crossings fairly well.

Here's the basic idea:

I've seen the videos, I would like to do the Peking-Paris but I think I'm a bit too old to give it a try, a bit hard on the body in a car I would want to use. I have another interesting friend, he was a bush pilot in Papua New Guinea, he has some crazy stories! His name is Kent, he owns a Mercedes business now. You'll like this, I have some stories but he is a great mechanic and pilot. I'm a decent pilot, I worked for Saab, but he is who I would want in Mongolia or anywhere else! :
